On Tuesday 13 December 2011, Italy’s first private rail operator, Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV), unveiled its new .italo AGV very high-speed train. The first trains are slated to start regularly scheduled service on the Turin-Salerno and Rome-Venice lines in early 2012. For this grand debut, NTV assembled some 800 people in Nola (Italy), including Italian political authorities and decision-makers, representatives of European railways, rail operators, employees and international media representatives.

Metropolis, Megacity, Megalopolis... All of these terms aptly describe the exponential growth in urban populations. In 2012, half of the world's people live in urban areas; by 2030, city dwellers will represent two thirds of the population. This is a major change to which every operator must adjust. When it comes to improving the capacity, operating frequency and safety of their fleets - constantly bearing in mind their concern for sustainable development - rail service providers can choose from multiple options: constructing or modernising metro and tramway lines, improving signalling, acquiring new railcars or renovating old ones.

We are entering into a new era of transport. The challenge we now face is how we manage the global travel needs of 7 billion people without depleting the earth’s resources. Today’s mantra is multimodality: the links between various forms of public transport and the ways in which they complement each other. And what if, now that we’ve begun to grasp this new way of thinking about public transport and the vast range of possible connections, we were to start to dream...
